เมื่อผมต้องสอนคอมพิวเตอร์ข้าราชการชั้นผู้ใหญ่
สัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมาผมถูกรุ่นน้องขอร้องให้ไปบรรยายกะทันหันวันรุ่งขึ้นเรื่อง
การใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เบื้องต้นที่ศูนย์ฝึกอบรมของหน่วยราชการ
เพราะวิทยากรซึ่งก็คือสามีของเธอป่วยกะทันหัน
เธอให้ข้อมูลว่าผู้เข้ารับการอบรมชุดนี้เป็นข้าราชการที่ถูกบังคับให้มาอบรมเพราะไม่ผ่านการประเมิน
ความรู้ด้านสารสนเทศ บางคน ซีแปด ซีเก้าแต่มีแนวคิดศักดินา
เห็นเอกชนคนไม่มียศเป็นบริวารไปหมด ขอให้ผมอดทนบรรยายให้จบตามหัวข้อ อย่าโต้ตอบ
ผมรับปากเมื่อไปถึงห้องบรรยายผมก็เริ่มเข้าใจคำพูดของรุ่นน้องแต่ละคนคุยกันอื้ออึงขณะผมแนะนำตัว

ชายคนหนึ่งพูดเสียงดังให้ผมสอนวิธีแชตหาคู่ การดูคลิปวิดิโอและเว็บไซต์โป๊
หลายคนหัวเราะสนับสนุน ผมต้องตะล่อมให้เข้าสู่บทเรียนว่า
"ได้ครับ แต่ต้องหัดเปิดเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ก่อน จึงจะเข้าไปดูได้"
ได้ผล ทุกคนเริ่มหาปุ่มเปิดเครื่อง และความโกลาหลก็เริ่ม
เพราะวิธีเปิดปิดของเครื่องแต่ละรุ่นไม่เหมือนกัน
และที่น่าเวียนหัวที่สุดคือ ทำทุกอย่างแต่เครื่องไม่ทำงาน
หาอยู่นานจึงพบว่าปลั๊กไม่ได้เสียบแค่เปิดครบทุกเครื่องก็ถึงเวลาพักทานกาแฟแล้วหลังหมดเวลาพักผู้เข้าอบรมก็ยังยืนสูบบุหรี่หรือจับกลุ่มคุยกัน
ผมต้องประกาศผ่านไมค์เชิญเข้าห้อง บางคนมองด้วยความไม่พอใจ
ผมชี้แจงว่าต้องรีบสอน "เพราะยังมีอุปกรณ์ต่อพ่วงอีกมากมายที่ต้องเรียนรู้
เช่น มอนิเตอร์ คีย์บอร์ด เมาส์ โมเด็ม ยูพีเอส..."
คุณพี่ผู้หญิงคนหนึ่งพูดแทรกขึ้นมาว่า
" ขอโทษนะคะ ตามระเบียบสำนักนายกฯ เวลาพิมพ์เอกสารราชการต้องใช้ภาษาไทย
ช่วยแปลไอ้เตอร์ๆ เด็มๆ อะไรของคุณให้เป็นคำไทยหน่อยได้ไหมคะ
จะได้ก่อประโยชน์กับการทำงานบ้าง..."
มีเสียงลอยมาตามลดให้ได้ยินจากท้ายห้องว่า
เด็กสมัยนี้ ติดไทยคำฝรั่งคำอยากให้รู้ว่าจบนอกผมฉุนกึก สูดหายใจยาว
"ได้ครับ งั้นเอาใหม่ เรารู้วิธีเปิดเครื่องคณิตกรณ์แล้ว
บางเครื่องอาจเป็นคณิตกรณ์ส่วนบุคคล บางเครื่องเป็นคณิตกรณ์วางตัก
แต่ไม่ว่าอย่างไรมันจะทำงานไม่ได้ ถ้าขาดชุดคำสั่งระบบปฏิบัติการและ
ชุดคำสั่งประยุกต์อื่นๆ ประการต่อมา คณิตกรณ์จะต้องมีครุภัณฑ์ต่อพ่วง
ซึ่งทำหน้าที่หลักสองรูปแบบ คือ นำเข้าข้อมูลไปส่งหน่วยประมวลผลกลาง
กับนำข้อมูลที่ประมวลแล้วมาแสดงให้เราดู"ผมชี้ไปที่จอภาพ
"นี่คือเครื่องเฝ้าสังเกตซึ่งอาจหนาเทอะทะแบบจอโทรทัศน์
หรือเป็นจอภาพผลึกเหลวที่ให้ความคมชัดกว่า
ส่วนครุภัณฑ์ต่อพ่วงที่นำเข้าข้อมูลไปให้หน่วยประมวลผลกลาง
อาจอยู่ในรูปหน่วยขับ ก และหน่วยขับ ข
ซึ่งสามารถอ่านและบันทึกข้อมูลเก็บไว้ในแผ่นบันทึกชนิดอ่อนปวกเปียก(floopy)
หรือในจานบันทึกแบบแข็งที่หน่วยขับ
อุปกรณ์นำเข้าและส่งออกข้อมูล ยังมีในรูปแบบอืนๆอีก เช่น
เครื่องกราดภาพ ตัวกล้ำและแยกสัญญาณ โทรภาพ
แต่ที่ขาดไม่ได้เลย
คือสิ่งนี้"ผมยกคีย์บอร์ดขึ้นมา"แผงแป้นอักขระซึ่งเป็นอุปกรณ์สำคัญที่สุดที่เราจะป้อนชุดคำสั่งเข้าสู่เครื่องคณิตกรณ์
จะเห็นว่าบนแผงแป้นอักขระจะมีกระดุมหรือ
ปุ่มอักขระมากมายมีทั้งที่คุ้นเคยกันดี เช่น มหัพภาค อัฒภาค ทวิภาค วิภัชภาคยัติภังค์
ปรัศนี อัศเจรีย์ เสมอภาค สัญประกาศ ทีฆสัญญา กับที่ยังไม่ได้บัญญัติศัพท์ เช่น
กระดุมสอดแทรก กระดุมเข้าไป กระดุมหลบหนี กระดุมอวกาศถอยหลัง หรือ backspace..."

วันนั้นไม่มีใครได้ดูคลิปวิดีโอ

ต่อมาผมได้รับผลการประเมินการสอนว่า
"ไม่น่าพอใจ และพูดภาษาไทย แต่ไม่รู้เรื่อง"
